Frequently Asked Questions

What is polyurethane foam insulation(Spray foam insulation)?

Polyurethane foam insulation stands out because it provides superior energy efficiency by combining high thermal resistance with an airtight seal. It fills every crack and gap, preventing drafts and moisture problems while maintaining its effectiveness for decades without sagging or settling. It’s versatility allows it to be used in almost any application, saving space and reducing energy costs. For a durable, efficient, and long-lasting insulation solution, polyurethane foam is unmatched.

What ventilation is required for residential homes?

Polyurethane foam seals cavities really well, which is great for reducing unwanted pollens, pollution and allergens from getting inside. To keep our sealed area from getting stale we advise complimenting foam insulation with a heat recovery ventilation(air replacement system) or an energy recovery ventilation( air and humidity replacement system). These systems provide fresh conditioned air replacement in the building so you never have to be concerned about moisture, mold or airing out the house through opening windows and doors.

What thickness of foam is required in a new residential house?

The thickness of spray foam needed depends on the building component and the required R-values for your region in New Zealand. Below are the recommended thicknesses for both closed-cell and open-cell spray foam insulation:

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

With an R-value of 1.1 per 25mm:

  • Roof/Ceiling: 150mm (R 6.6)
  • Walls: 46mm (R 2.0)
  • Floors: 30mm (R 1.3)

More information on Closed Cell Spray Foam

Open-Cell Spray Foam

With an R-value of 0.78 per 25mm:

  • Roof/Ceiling: 210mm (R 6.6)
  • Walls: 65mm (R 2.0)
  • Floors: 45mm (R 1.3) * Internal only

These calculations meet the updated NZ standards as of May 2023. For more details, refer to the H1 Building Code. Always consult a professional installer to ensure compliance with local building codes and specific project requirements.

What type of foam should I consider?

Closed-cell Foam

Interior & exterior – Closed-cell foam is a versatile option that can be applied directly to metal, timber, or concrete surfaces. With its outstanding insulation properties, it creates a vapor barrier when applied at a thickness of over 38mm. Elite insulation properties, air sealing, moisture reducing. Closed-cell foam is suitable for a variety of applications, including residential, commercial, vehicles, and marine environments, and works well for both internal and external use.

Open-cell Foam

Interior only (walls and ceiling) – Open-cell foam is an excellent choice for those seeking superior insulation properties, acoustic dampening, and effective air sealing, especially for interior areas such as walls and ceilings. It’s also ideal for budget-conscious projects without compromising on quality.

Are your installers certified and does foam meet the building code requirements?

Yes – Our professional installers are certified and the foam we use is Code Mark Certified to comply with NZ Building Code standards

Is foam eco friendly?

Yes, spray foam is one of the most eco-friendly insulation options available today.

We use advanced Huntsman HFO closed-cell foam and Agribalance open-cell foam, which features low global warming potential technology, helping reduce environmental impact right from the start. Unlike other insulations, spray foam is manufactured on-site, eliminating packaging waste and unnecessary freight which is a major contributor to carbon emissions in construction.

The products we use are composed of a total of up to 19% recycled and renewable content.

Once cured, the foam becomes chemically inert and safe, with no ongoing off-gassing, fibres, or breakdown often lasting 80–100 years without degrading.

Our team uses protective suits and ventilates the area during installation to ensure best practice and safety – just like any high-performance material requires. The result is a long-lasting, energy-saving, environmentally conscious solution that outperforms conventional insulation on nearly every front.

Container Insulation

Closed-cell spray foam is the best option for insulating shipping containers.

– The foam adhere’s directly to the steel surface, sealing all gaps and heavily reduces condensation(in most cases fully eliminates it).

– The container can be empty or framed out with wiring and foam can be applied.

– Using a container as a workspace and the radiant heat inside is too hot? Foam solves this problem.

Very few insulation materials can be used in containers without risk of getting wet and moldy from condensation.

House Insulation

We have two types of foam we can install in houses depending on insulation goals.

New Builds – During the building process we apply the foam before the interior linings have been fitted.

Existing Renovation Houses – We can insulate existing houses during renovation stages. This is generally done when the wall linings have been removed.

Steel Framing – Foam is perfect for steel framed buildings, no need to be concerned about moisture issues when using closed cell foam.

Unique Builds – Have a unique or custom build like a concrete dome and green living space? We can insulate that! We even have waterproof coatings available to compliment these unique situations.

We can insulate the roof, ceiling, walls, slab & underfloor. Foam passes all the NZ Building Code requirements.

Shed/Barn/Agricultural Insulation

Agriculture – Needing insulation for pack house storage or animals. Foam can be applied onto most surfaces and help keep temperatures stable.

Storage Shed – Our foam can be applied directly to the iron or building wrap of a shed.
